Elisabeth Troost was de dochter van de schilder Cornelis Troost. Ze trouwde op haar 28ste met Cornelis Ploos van Amstel die ze al jaren kende als verzamelaar van het werk van haar vader. Het bruidspaar liet zich portretteren door Van der Mijn. Die gaf Elisabeth weer in een huiselijke setting bij de theetafel. Het Chinees porselein, de satijnen stoffen en het hermelijn benadrukken haar verfijnde smaak en hoge positie in de Amsterdamse burgerij.
