Cornelis Ploos van Amstel was een Amsterdamse kunstverzamelaar. Vooral zijn tekeningencollectie was beroemd: hij had er zo’n 7.000. Ploos van Amstel liet zich portretteren ter gelegenheid van zijn huwelijk met Elisabeth, de dochter van de schilder Cornelis Troost. Haar portret hangt hier ook. Van der Mijn, die in Amsterdam werkte, kwam uit een Londense kunstenaarsfamilie. De tekening die hij Ploos van Amstel in de hand gaf, is gemaakt door zijn broer Frans van der Mijn.
