Schijnbaar achteloos liggen wat bloemen op de hoek van een marmeren tafelblad. Blikvanger is een grote roos met tere blaadjes. Op de bloemen strijken twee vlinders neer. Dit kleine schilderij vormt een paar met een fruitstilleven. Samen zijn ze een unicum in het oeuvre van Jan van Huysum, die vooral grote en overdadige boeketten schilderde. Van Huysums stillevens waren zeer geliefd – hij was een van de bestbetaalde schilders van zijn tijd.
