Johannes Moreelse was een Utrechtse schilder, die enkele jaren in Rome werkte en daar beïnvloed raakte door de schilderijen van Caravaggio. In diens stijl schilderde hij voorstellingen met ongeïdealiseerde halffiguren en grote licht-donkercontrasten. De grijnzende man op dit schilderij stelt Democritus voor, de lachende filosoof. Hij maakt zich vrolijk om de ijdelheid van ons mensen en de vergankelijkheid van de wereld. Democritus vormt een paar met Heraclitus, de wenende filosoof. Moreelse maakte verschillende versies van beide filosofen.
