Hondecoeter was een specialist in het schilderen van gevogelte. Hier schrikken de vogels van een blaffende hond, die links opduikt. Een bonte haan stapt op hoge poten weg, de witte eend beschermt snaterend haar kuikens, een duif vliegt haastig op. Het schilderij hoort bij het werk met ganzen en eenden dat hier ook hangt. Beide komen uit het bezit van de familie van Oranje-Nassau en hingen in de 18de eeuw in slot Oranienstein in het Duitse Diez.
