De Heem is vooral bekend om de kleurrijke, zwierige bloemstillevens, die hij vanaf 1650 schilderde. Maar eerder schilderde hij eenvoudige stillevens in bruine en grijze tonen. Geletterde lezers kenden de titels van de boeken op deze tafel en begrepen dat in deze werken de noodlotsgedachte centraal stond. Daarmee gaf De Heem dit stilleven een diepere laag. Het waarschuwt voor de vergankelijkheid van het leven: stof ben je, tot stof keer je terug – hoe belezen je ook bent.
