Hondecoeter was gespecialiseerd in dit soort decoratieve schilderijen met allerhande pluimvee. Hier gaat het om een verzameling ganzen en eenden in een landschap bij stormachtig weer. Het schilderij hoort bij het werk met kippen en eenden dat hier ook hangt. Beide komen uit het bezit van de familie van Oranje-Nassau en hingen in de 18de eeuw in slot Oranienstein in het Duitse Diez.
