Graaf Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen was enkele jaren gouverneur van de Hollandse kolonie in Brazilië. Tijdens zijn Braziliaanse jaren liet hij in Den Haag het Mauritshuis bouwen. Later werd hij stadhouder van Kleef, net over de Nederlands-Duitse grens. In die functie liet hij dit portret maken. Op de achtergrond is de tuin te zien die Johan Maurits in Kleef liet aanleggen. Het portret is gemaakt door de Haagse portretschilder Jan de Baen en is één van de weinige schilderijen in het Mauritshuis die nog hun originele, 17de-eeuwse lijst hebben.
