De grondlegger van de collectie van het Mauritshuis is prins Willem V van Oranje. Op zijn 18de werd hij stadhouder van Holland, een jaar later trouwde hij met de 16-jarige Wilhelmina van Pruisen. Kort na hun huwelijk schilderde de Deense schilder Ziesenis enkele portretten van het jonge paar. Willem V bezat een grote verzameling Hollandse en Vlaamse meesters uit de Gouden Eeuw. Maar hij verzamelde ook oudheden, munten, stenen, fossielen, boeken en zelfs dieren. Zijn collectie vormde later de basis voor verschillende musea, o.a. het Mauritshuis.
