Aletta Hanemans was 19, toen ze in het huwelijk trad en Frans Hals dit portret van haar maakte. Het portret van de bruidegom – Jacob Olycan – hangt links. Hals verstond als geen ander de kunst om mensen te karakteriseren en gold als de beste portrettist van Haarlem. Hals is beroemd om zijn losse, brede penseelstreken. Maar hier werkte hij verfijnder, bijvoorbeeld bij de met goud geborduurde ‘bruidsborst’. Waarschijnlijk was Hals bij deze portretopdracht minder vrij en stond een goede gelijkenis voorop.
