Jacob Olycan was een rijke Haarlemse bierbrouwer. Toen hij trouwde met Aletta Hanemans liet het paar zich portretteren door de beste portretschilder van de stad: Frans Hals. Die maakte twee schilderijen. De bruidegom links en de bruid rechts, geheel volgens de conventie. Olycan, 29 jaar oud, kijkt ons met de arm in de zij vanuit de hoogte aan en straalt trots en zelfverzekerdheid uit. Hij draagt een deftig glanzend, zwart pak en een uitbundige kraag van wit kant, die heel trefzeker geschilderd zijn.
