Vermeer is vooral bekend om zijn kleine schilderijen van verstilde interieurs met enkele figuren. Maar aan het begin van zijn loopbaan schilderde hij enkele grotere voorstellingen uit de Bijbel en de mythologie, waaronder dit schilderij. De godin Diana zit uit te rusten, samen met haar nimfen. Ze is de godin van de jacht en de nacht, vandaar de jachthond aan haar voeten en het maantje op haar voorhoofd. Typisch voor Vermeer is de dromerige sfeer van de voorstelling.
