De Vlaming Van der Weyden schilderde met olieverf, waarmee hij heel gedetailleerd kon werken. Op dit altaarstuk is te zien hoe Maria bij haar dode zoon neerknielt en hem beweent. Zijn volgelingen kijken ontsteld toe en laten hun tranen de vrije loop. De heftige emoties waren bedoeld om medelijden op te wekken bij de gelovigen. In het gezelschap valt de knielende bisschop met zijn ceremoniële gewaad behoorlijk uit de toon. Hij is de man die dit altaarstuk bestelde.
