Teniers was telg uit een Antwerpse kunstenaarsfamilie. Hij schilderde dit keukeninterieur op koper, een gladde ondergrond waarop je heel gedetailleerd kunt schilderen. De dromerige, appelschillende vrouw is Teniers echtgenote Anna Brueghel. Hun zoon David houdt het bord met geschilde appels vast. Opvallend is de zwanenpastei op tafel met allerlei liefdessymbolen: een krans van rode en witte roosjes en een schildje met een brandend hart en twee ineengeslagen handjes. Misschien bedoelde Teniers dit als een eerbewijs aan Anna.
