Seghers, een Vlaams specialist in het schilderen van bloemen, combineerde zijn bloemen vaak met een stenen beeldje. Hier is koning-stadhouder Willem III te zien, de stadhouder van Holland die ook koning van Engeland was. De takjes oranjebloesem en de oranje lelies verwijzen naar zijn familienaam: van Oranje. Waarschijnlijk was het schilderij een geschenk van Seghers aan Constantijn Huygens, de secretaris van de stadhouder. Het heeft tot halverwege de 19de eeuw in zijn huis gehangen, vlak bij het Mauritshuis.
