Hoog op zijn paard zit Pieter de Roovere, heer van Hardinxveld. Hij wijst met zijn zweep op de zalm die de visser hem toont. Op de achtergrond zijn mannen bezig met de zalmvisserij, de belangrijkste bron van inkomsten in Hardinxveld. De lucht is donker, maar aan de horizon is nog net een reep gouden zonlicht te zien. Cuyp, die in het nabijgelegen Dordrecht werkte, koos hier voor een opvallend laag standpunt, waardoor De Roovere hoog boven ons uitsteekt. Dat versterkt zijn imposante voorkomen.
