Deze elegante man is Quijntin Simons, een historieschilder uit Brussel. Met zijn modieuze mantel over zijn schouders, zijn halflange haar en zijn zwierige snor en sik, straalt Simons de aristocratische elegantie uit die kenmerkend is voor de portretten van Anthonie van Dyck. Van Dyck verbleef jarenlang in Italië waar hij faam verwierf met virtuoze staatsieportretten van voorname edelen. In 1632 werd hij hofschilder van de Engelse koning Charles I, maar af en toe reisde hij naar het vasteland om opdrachten uit te voeren, zoals dit portret.
