Huygens was secretaris van de stadhouders, dichter en componist. Daarnaast was hij een huisvader, die een deel van de opvoeding zelf op zich nam. In 1639 maakte Hanneman dit portret van Huygens en zijn kinderen. Hij schilderde ze in zes medaillons omgeven door imitatie beeldhouwwerk. Het schilderij kreeg een plaats in Huygens’ huis, dichtbij het Mauritshuis. Op het portret ontbreekt Huygens’ vrouw Suzanne van Baerle. Zij was twee jaar eerder in het kraambed overleden bij de geboorte van hun jongste dochter.
