Een groep ruiters arriveert bij een tent die in gebruik is als herberg. Vandaar de bierpul aan de stok. Een van de mannen blaast op zijn trompet, terwijl anderen al een liefje te pakken hebben. Wouwerman, die gespecialiseerd was in het schilderen van paarden, koos hier een beweeglijke scène voor zijn favoriete onderwerp. Donkere wolken drijven voorbij, de vlaggen wapperen en de paarden zijn onrustig.
