Wouwerman was dé paardenschilder van de 17de eeuw en schilderde vooral jachtscènes en landschappen met ruiters. Deze veldslag is zijn grootste schilderij. De paarden, ruiters en het voetvolk vormen een bijna onontwarbare kluwen. Alleen de schimmel met de ruiter in het rode jasje springt in het oog. In de 18de eeuw waren Wouwermans schilderijen zeer gewild bij de Europese elite. Stadhouder prins Willem V van Oranje had er maar liefst negen – ze behoren nu tot de collectie van het Mauritshuis.
