In dit idyllische heuvellandschap valt vooral het licht op. Het is het warme, gouden licht van een laagstaande zon, dat alles doordrenkt. Enkele reizigers trekken over een bergpad en houden halt voor een sanitaire stop. Tussen de bomen door is het rimpelloze water van een meer te zien. Jan Both trok als twintiger naar het zuiden en woonde enkele jaren in Italië. Daar vond hij de inspiratie voor dit soort zonovergoten heuvellandschappen. Terug in zijn geboortestad Utrecht, schilderde hij er tientallen.
