Dit is Engel de Ruyter, de 20-jarige zoon van admiraal Michiel de Ruyter. Net als zijn vader liet hij zich portretteren door Ferdinand Bol. Die liet Engel zien als een heerser, ondanks diens jonge leeftijd. De schepen op de achtergrond zijn geschilderd door Van de Velde de Jonge, een specialist in zeegezichten. De vergulde lijst van het schilderij is origineel. Hij is rijk gedecoreerd met attributen die verwijzen naar de marine.
