Het gordijn is opgetild, zodat we vrij zicht hebben op een gelagkamer, waar jong en oud zich vermaken met eten, drinken, spelen en flirten. Maar het ging Jan Steen niet alleen om de vrolijke gezelligheid. Zijn boodschap zit verstopt in een klein detail bij het raam. Daar ligt op de donkere zoldering een jongetje bellen te blazen, met naast zich een doodshoofd. Het leven is prachtig, maar spat uiteindelijk als een zeepbel uit elkaar.
