Steen maakte iets bijzonders van dit kinderportret. Hij plaatste het meisje in een hoenderhof, terwijl ze een lammetje melk te drinken geeft. Ze wordt omringd door een bonte verzameling vogels. Twee bonkige knechten kijken geamuseerd toe – door hun aanwezigheid lijkt het meisje nog liever en aandoenlijker. Het kind is Jacoba van Wassenaer. Op de achtergrond staat het kasteel waar ze woonde: Kasteel Lokhorst of Oud-Teijlingen. Toen Steen het portret schilderde, woonde hij daar vlakbij in Warmond.
