In opdracht van stadhouder Frederik Hendrik en zijn vrouw Amalia van Solms schilderde Abraham Bloemaert een serie schilderijen met klassieke onderwerpen. Dit grote, helder gekleurde doek maakte hij voor hun buiten in Honselaarsdijk. Te zien is hoe in het Griekse Delphi Theagenes een hardloopwedstrijd wint. Chariclea reikt hem de erepalm uit, waarop Theagenes haar een handkus geeft. Spontaan ontbrandt bij beiden het liefdesvuur. Het verhaal is een verwijzing naar de liefde tussen Frederik Hendrik en Amalia.
