In de bergen wordt een konvooi met paarden, rijtuigen en gewapende begeleiders aangevallen door een bende rovers. Er wordt geschoten en er vallen slachtoffers – het is een onstuimige warreling van figuren en paarden. De steile, grillige rotsen geven de voorstelling extra dramatiek. De Haarlemse schilder Berchem maakte dit schilderij naar een voorbeeld van Pieter van Laer.
