Paul Bril trok als jonge schilder van Antwerpen naar Rome en werd daar de invloedrijkste landschapsschilder van zijn tijd. Dit landschap schilderde Bril op koper, een ondergrond die heel geschikt is voor fijne details. Links is de heilige Hieronymus te zien die in eenzaamheid bidt en boete doet. Het landschap is een fantasielandschap zoals Vlaamse kunstenaars in de 16de eeuw schilderden. De kleuren verlopen van bruin, via groen naar blauw, waardoor het landschap zich eindeloos lijkt uit te strekken.
