Dit schilderij is afkomstig uit de familie van Johan Maurits, degene voor wie het Mauritshuis werd gebouwd. Op het portret staat te lezen wie de dame is: Ernestina, femme de conte Jan de Nassau – vrouw van graaf Jan van Nassau. Deze Jan was een halfbroer van Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen en was – tot ontzetting van de rest van de protestantse familie – openlijk katholiek. Jan van Ravesteyn schilderde Ernestina in vol ornaat, met in haar haar een kostbaar sieraad van parels en oranjebloesem.
