Op een open plek in het bos brengen vrouwen en herders een offer aan het beeld van Flora, de godin van de bloemen. De beek voert naar een antieke stad en rotsige bergen. Van Huysum was gespecialiseerd in overdadige stillevens, maar schilderde ook dit soort voorstellingen. Het geïdealiseerde landschap en het warme, gouden licht doen Italiaans aan. Van Huysum zal zich hebben gebaseerd op tekeningen en schilderijen van collega’s, want zelf heeft hij de reis naar Italië nooit gemaakt.
