De Utrechtse schilder Van Honthorst verbleef enige tijd in Rome en raakte daar beïnvloed door het werk van Caravaggio. Hij maakte furore met nachtstukken, die hem de bijnaam Gherardo delle Notti opleverden, Gerrit van de Nachten. Maar hij schilderde ook vrolijke figuurstukken, zoals deze uitdagende jonge vrouw. Van Honthorst was een van de Utrechtse caravaggisten en had met zijn moderne, dramatische schilderstijl grote invloed op de Hollandse schilderkunst. Toen hij hofschilder van stadhouder Frederik Hendrik werd, werd zijn stijl allengs keuriger.
