Toen oppergod Zeus nog een baby was, dreigde zijn vader hem op te eten. Daarom bracht zijn moeder hem onder bij een koningsdochter. Hier ligt de kleine veilig te slapen op haar schoot. Een grijnzende faun draagt juist een kuip met melk aan. Berchem schilderde vooral kleine landschappen. Mogelijk wilde hij met dit grote, mythologische schilderij laten zien dat hij geschikt was als schilder voor de Oranjezaal van Paleis Huis ten Bosch in Den Haag. Tevergeefs, de prestigieuze opdracht ging naar anderen.
