Vergeleken met bloemstillevens uit de vroege 17de eeuw is dit schilderij een ware bloemenexplosie. Hier geen stijf boeket, maar een bonte overdaad aan bloemen, die over de rand van de vaas hangen. Bijzonder is de weerspiegeling in de glazen fles; daar is het atelierraam te zien met een wolkenlucht en wat voorwerpen in de vensterbank. De Heem was de invloedrijkste bloemenschilder van zijn tijd. Hij woonde verschillende perioden in Antwerpen en maakte daar kennis met het uitbundige van het zuiden.
