Dit schilderij is bedoeld om hoog te hangen, bijvoorbeeld boven een deur. Het maakte deel uit van een serie van vier seizoenen afkomstig uit een woonhuis aan de Amsterdamse Herengracht. Hier is de zomer verbeeld. In het midden staat Ceres, de Romeinse godin van het graan, dat in de zomer op de velden rijpt. Berchem is vooral bekend als schilder van Italiaans aandoende landschappen. Maar hij schilderde ook decoratieve voorstellingen, zoals deze allegorie.
