Abraham van Beyeren was een stillevenspecialist pur sang. Hij schilderde veel overdadige pronkstillevens met kostbare voorwerpen als zilveren schalen, fijn glaswerk en Chinees porselein. Opvallend zijn de losse penseelstreken waarmee hij zijn stillevens schilderde – normaal waren die veel preciezer geschilderd om de verschillende materialen goed weer te geven. Tussen alle rijkdom schilderde Van Beyeren ook zichzelf. In de reflectie van de zilveren schenkkan is te zien hoe hij achter zijn ezel staat te schilderen.
