Arent de Gelder was rond 1662 de laatste leerling van Rembrandt. Die leerde hem schilderen met een brede toets, donkere kleuren en sterke lichtaccenten. De Gelder bleef altijd in deze stijl werken, ook toen een fijnere toets en lichtere kleuren in de mode kwamen. De Gelder had een voorkeur voor Bijbelse voorstellingen. Zoals het verhaal van de oude Simeon, die in een loflied uitbarst als hij de kleine Jezus herkent als zijn Messias. Het kind in zijn armen lijkt de bron van het goddelijk licht te zijn.
