In einem Innenraum haben fünf Herren und eine Frau zum Mittagsmahl, zu welchem eine Suppe gereicht wird, Platz genommen. Die Lichtführung liegt auf der rechts sitzenden jungen Frau. Ein Diener im verschatteten Hintergrund bringt gerade auf einer Platte das Hauptgericht. Das Motiv ist auch überliefert - leicht variiert - als Stich unter dem Titel "Nachmittag und Hochmittag. Jetzt" (1806). Es stammt aus der Folge "Der Sonntag vor zwei Jahrhunderten und jetzt", 3. Szene.
