In de negentiende eeuw overheerste het Historisme in de kunst en architectuur. Deze stroming blikte terug op het verleden en ontleende decoraties aan vroegere stijlperioden uit onder andere de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw. Zo ontstonden diverse neostijlen zoals de Neogotiek, Neobarok en de Neorococo. Ook voor de decoratie van de negentiende-eeuwse waaier werd er geput uit het verleden. Dit soort waaiers worden ook wel pastiches genoemd. Deze neostijlen worden in de negentiende eeuw door en naast elkaar gebruikt wat het lastig maakt deze waaiers te dateren.
