Under the laconic title "Skulls," Peter Sandbichler has been sculpting animal skulls since 2014, manifesting them as oversized zoomorphic bone structures. A kind of baroque vanitas meditation is translated into contemporary materialities and sensitivities of perception. Using image references or real skeletons, the artist reconstructs individual skulls in cardboard and other waste materials as negative forms, which he then casts with self-hardening substances such as acrylic resin or fiberglass-reinforced plastic.
