Dit is geen voltooid schilderij, maar een olieverfschets. Rubens maakte hem als ‘modello’ of ontwerp voor een enorm altaarstuk in de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal in Antwerpen. Hiermee liet hij zijn opdrachtgevers zien wat zijn plannen waren. Rubens schilderde Maria’s hemelvaart als een wervelende beweging: vanuit de stenen sarcofaag zweeft Maria in een wolk van engelen richting de hemel waar zij wordt gekroond. De voorstelling krijgt extra vaart door de snelle en krachtige halen van Rubens’ hand.
