Lange tijd werd dit schilderij beschouwd als een zelfportret van de jonge Rembrandt. Maar na uitgebreid onderzoek bleek dat het een heel goede kopie is van een zelfportret van Rembrandt, gemaakt door een van zijn leerlingen. Het origineel – dat Rembrandt wél maakte – bevindt zich in Neurenberg. Dit paneel is dus niet door Rembrandt geschilderd, maar stelt wel de drieëntwintigjarige schilder voor.
