In een idyllisch landschap zijn talloze figuren te zien die rondwandelen, uitrusten of bezig zijn op het water. De sprookjesachtige boom op de voorgrond speelt echter de hoofdrol. Knoestig en begroeid met mos en klimop domineert hij het landschap. Zo toont hij ons de grootsheid van de natuur. Van Geel schilderde ongeveer dertig van dit soort fantasielandschappen. Opmerkelijk, want zijn collega’s legden zich steeds meer toe op realistische voorstellingen van het vlakke, Hollandse landschap.
