Bij een stal bereiden wat jagers zich voor op de jacht. Ze worden overspoeld door een warm, gouden licht dat zuidelijk aandoet. Het silhouet van de ruiter steekt er krachtig tegen af. De Haarlemmer Pieter van Laer woonde enkele jaren in Rome, waar hij kennis maakte met een nieuw onderwerp: Romeinse straattaferelen met allerlei volkse types. Maar hij was ook goed in het schilderen van veestukken. Dit schilderij is een mooie combinatie van beide onderwerpen.
