In een eenvoudige ruimte zit een oude vrouw gebogen over haar handwerkje. Ze zit geconcentreerd te kantklossen. Handwerken werd in de 17de eeuw gezien als een vrouwelijke deugd en was een symbool voor huiselijke ijver. Dit schilderij toont dus hoe men vond dat het hoort: een ijverige vrouw in een proper huis. Het schilderij straalt een intieme, verstilde sfeer uit. Dat komt onder andere door Nicolaas Maes’ terughoudende kleurgebruik (bruin, rood, zwart en wit) en de subtiele lichtval in het duistere vertrek.
