In 1581 publiceerde de Italiaanse schrijver Torquato Tasso een roman die een internationale bestseller werd: La Gerusalemme Liberata (Het bevrijde Jeruzalem). Het boek bleef kunstenaars eeuwenlang inspireren. Hier is te zien hoe de beeldschone heks Armida Rinaldo in zijn slaap wil vermoorden. Als ze ziet hoe mooi hij is en zijn heerlijke geur opsnuift, valt ze als een blok voor hem. En zo overwint de liefde. Willem van Mieris was een zoon van de Leidse fijnschilder Frans van Mieris de Oude. Zijn schilderijen zijn zó glad geschilderd dat ze er haast gepolijst uit zien.
