Adriaen Brouwer zette boeren vaak neer als zuipschuiten en vechtersbazen. Deze slonzige man met zijn rechterhand in zijn halfgeopende wambuis staat er ook niet op zijn best op. Op de achtergrond is vaag een duinlandschap te zien, met links een wandelend paartje. Brouwer bracht de verf heel dun op, met vlotte, trefzekere penseelstreken. Brouwer kwam uit Antwerpen, maar werkte ook enige tijd in Haarlem en Amsterdam. Met zijn kluchtige voorstellingen beïnvloedde hij de Hollandse schilders van het dagelijks leven.
