Een jonge vrouw zit met haar naaiwerk bij het raam, met naast haar een dienstmeisje dat bij de wieg knielt. De schilder is Gerrit Dou, de grondlegger van de Leidse fijnschilders. Hij werkte zó minutieus dat de losse verfstreken nauwelijks zijn te onderscheiden. Dit schilderij maakte in 1660 deel uit van een diplomatiek geschenk van Holland aan de nieuwe koning van Engeland, Charles II. De koning bood Gerrit Dou daarop meteen een vaste betrekking aan het hof aan. Maar die bedankte voor de eer.
