Ter Borch werd beroemd met intieme voorstellingen van mensen die opgaan in hun bezigheid, vaak onbewust van onze aanwezigheid. Bijzonder is zijn talent om verschillende materialen weer te geven, zoals het glanzende satijn van de rok van het meisje. We zien hier een soldaat die een brief heeft gekregen van een bode. Het is niet moeilijk te bedenken dat de brief een oproep is om naar het front te gaan, weg van het meisje dat verliefd tegen hem aanleunt.
