De betekenis van deze voorstelling van de fijnschilder Schalcken was voor 17de-eeuwers meteen duidelijk. Het gaat om de les die de jonge, modieuze vrouw krijgt, terwijl ze bijna het vogeltje uit zijn kistje laat ontsnappen; de vogel staat symbool voor haar maagdelijkheid. De oude vrouw naast haar steekt vermanend haar vinger op en waarschuwt voor de gevaren van de liefde. Maar haar les is nutteloos – de jonge maagd heeft er geen oren naar.
