Waarschijnlijk is deze vrouw de Antwerpse Clara Fourment, haar man Peter van Hecke hangt links. Ze behoorden tot Rubens’ intieme familiekring, want Clara was de oudere zus van Rubens’ tweede vrouw Hélène. Dat het paar in welstand leeft is duidelijk te zien aan hun modieuze burgerkleding van glanzende zwarte stoffen en hun mooie kanten kragen. En aan Clara’s waaier van struisvogelveren. Rubens was dé Vlaamse schilder van de 17de eeuw. Met zijn flamboyante, barokke stijl beïnvloedde hij een hele generatie kunstenaars na hem.
