Waarschijnlijk is deze man de Antwerpse handelaar Peter van Hecke, zijn vrouw Clara Fourment hangt rechts. Ze behoorden tot Rubens’ intieme familiekring: Clara Fourment was de oudere zus van Rubens’ tweede vrouw Hélène. Dat het paar in welstand leeft is duidelijk te zien aan hun modieuze burgerkleding van glanzende zwarte stoffen en hun mooie kanten kragen. Rubens was dé Vlaamse schilder van de 17de eeuw. Met zijn flamboyante, barokke stijl beïnvloedde hij een hele generatie kunstenaars na hem.
